Showing Up Is Half the Battle

It’s late Thursday evening. The boys have just finished dinner. I’m cleaning dishes, talking to my oldest while he’s finishing his last bites.
And I get a text.

“Dionne, are you okay? We’re here. For the recording. Just wanted to make sure you’re on your way.”
I nearly dropped the plate.
What?
What podcast? Where was I supposed to be?
And that became the spiral.
I jumped on the phone with Deverick, and we’re both realizing—clearly—there were communication gaps. But what I do know is this… he has a full team sitting at Media Rhythm Institute Studios (MRI).
Waiting.
And I am nowhere near there. Or prepared to be there.
But I have to be.
I’m coming out of a season where I lost my father—unexpectedly. My personal life was stripped and left unprotected. I’m raising three Black boys in America. And I run a small, Black woman-owned consulting company that resisted the mantra for a long time… but now understands it fully:
You eat what you kill.
If it wasn’t for the Holy Spirit, you might think I was holding all of this together on my own. But I know better. I know where my strength comes from.
And it was that faith…and Deverick’s kindness—his empathy, really—that made me say:
If there’s a will, there’s a way.
While still on the phone, I said—If it’s God’s plan, I can make this work. If y’all can wait until 8:30… I’ll be there.
I hung up and moved faster than I ever have in my life.
Shower.
Clothes.
Iron.
“Stay in the house. Don’t open the door for anybody while Mommy’s gone.”
Then another text from Devrock:

We’re locked in. We’re here if you’re here.
I didn’t show up as my best.
But I showed up.At my fullest.
Take a listen to the podcast. I remember it being raw, reflective… the essence of me. I’ll be honest, I can’t quite bring myself to watch it, so I’d welcome your reflections.
And if you’re in the area, I hope to see you at Polish Your Piece on Thursday, March 26th, @ 7 PM at MRI Studios on Howard Street. [Click here for your ticket.]
